Standard materials are among the products of VNIIM (along with high-precision measuring setups and systems, verification equipment, measurement procedures and normative documents related to the measurement assurance).
Standard materials carry the most reliable information about physical and chemical properties and composition of various objects, substances and materials to be tested. The need for standard materials is steadily growing. More and more enterprises and organizations use them for the validation of the measurement accuracy. We provide high-precision and stable standard materials to our customers on the largest possible scale. For this purpose, VNIIM has at its disposal a unique technological and instrumental base including 53 national primary standards and a system of precision measuring setups. The laboratories of VNIIM specialized in different fields and types of measurement are able to make materials reproducing several quantities (for example, the standard material of natural gas with the specified values of mole fraction of 20 components, combustion heat and relative density).
We take utmost care to achieve the equivalence of our standard materials with the foreign analogues in order to ensure equitable partnership for Russia in production and trade. During the period from 1997 to 2008 VNIIM took part in about sixty comparisons organized by international metrological organizations. On the basis of the results of these comparisons measuring capabilities of VNIIM were recognized and published at the site of the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM).
With a view to coordinate the work related to the creation of standard materials, a special division - the Service of Standard Materials has been established in the Institute. The officers of the Service work in compliance with the VNIIM Quality System corresponding to GOST R ISO/IEC 17025-2000 "General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories" and ISO Guide 34:2000 "General Requirements for the Competence of Reference Material Producers".
